Real World on your Desktop

Filed under: RWRE Member Notes — ken.gregg @ 4:10 pm

I have just added a function to the Utilities menu that allows you to view your listings (and the hot sheets for MLS members) on your desktop without having to log on to RealWorld. I have been using these to monitor new listings as you enter them into RealWorld and am quite excited about what can be done.

The functions use a desktop Dashboard program called KlipFolio. KlipFolio is a very small download (about 900kb) and with all of the RealWorld functions installed (as well as weather and Google news), uses about 5 mb of ram. KlipFolio only runs under XP and Windows 2000. And, because it automatically downloads data from the server every few minutes, I do not recommend it unless you have a broadband (always on) internet connection.

So far the response to these has been very positive. I am in the process of adding more capabilities around KlipFolio so install it today.

Stormy Winter

I love it when a storm impresses even the National Weather Service. This from the weather forecast discussion this morning:

“GEEZ…WHAT A MESS! JUST KEEPING THE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
STRAIGHT IS A HERCULEAN TASK THIS MORNING. SEE THE BOTTOM OF THIS
MESSAGE FOR THE HIT LIST.”

Florence has had power problems earlier this week. Wish the failover was ready. And even more, I wish I had the weather station up.

Implementing a Grid with LiveGrid Plus

I have been working with some of the features of the Rico project for some time now. One of the nicest components is the Javascript data grid (LiveGrid). The thing about this grid is that it will display thousands of rows fetching small segments of the data as the user scrolls.

The original LiceGrid in the Rico project has been enhanced by Mat Brown (http://dowdybrown.com) to include resizable columns, filters, frozen columns, horizontal scrolling, just about every feature you would see in a data grid in a desktop application.

I keep seeing the same questions posted over and over in the Rico forums about the Rico grid. For the most part the implementation of the two grids is very similar. However the advanced features require quite a few differences in initialization parameters so the following discussion covers Mat’s LiveGrid Plus. (more…)

I’m beginning to feel like salesforce.com

and it’s not fun …

Well ATT is trying to put us out of business again. It would not be so stressfull if it was just the RealWorld site and Assessor tax information. But having client sites down is absolutely not acceptable.

As I write this the problem (what ever it is this time) is still not fixed. About 3 months ago a wire pair in the local loop corroded through and the RealWorld site was down for about 4 hours. Today (Thursday) it went down at about 3 PM. It’s approaching 6:30 PM now and Qwest promised to have it fixed within 90 minutes about an hour ago.

I’m beginning to understand what salesforce.com felt like during their recent outage problems. At least we’re still ahead of them for uptime for this year.

Bandon Fiber Project

My mother is one of the first test homes for the new ComSpan fiber to the premises (FTTP) project in Bandon. Late last week the hooked up her TV and internet connections. Though I don’t have any experience with her old (Charter) TV quality she says the Fiber TV has a noticeably better picture quality.

I did stop by to make sure her new internet connection was properly firewalled and ran a couple of speed tests on her new 1 megabit connection (the slowest offered). Acording to www.dslreports.com speed test, she is getting 890 K both up and down. Including the TCP overhead the connection tests at the full advertised speed. And the browsing experience is incredible. Pages load instantly. My Verizon DSL just tested at 1234 K and is not anywhere near as responsive.

The bottom line is, if you are signed up for FTTP in Bandon, I’m sure you are going to love it.

Rounding Corners with Rico

One of the eye candy functions of the Rico library is the ability to round the corners of a div element. Though I do not actually use this in my projects, over the past few days I have responded to posts on the Rico forum asking for help with this function. Though I’m no expert, I have learned a little about the workings of Rico rounding and with all of the requests for any documentation, figured my comments are better than nothing. So here goes.

Picassa 2

I have been meaning to write something about Google’s Picassa photo organizer since before I started my bolg. I just ran across an article http://www.hartnup.net/wordpress/picasa-2-vs-iphoto/ comparing Picassa to Apple’s iPhoto 5 and wanted to link to it so … (more…)

It’s About time

I have been meaning to do this for some time. Looked at several blogging programs. I finally decided to go with WordPress because a couple of the bloggs I read use it and I liked the look.

This site includes everything I write. I have pulled some of the categories out and publish them on my other sites. http://www.rwre.com contains real estate listings for the south coast, I also have a members back end system wher eagents maintain their listings, http://atis.rwre.com contains assessor tax data for most of oregon (by subscription), and realworldcrm.com (not yet ready for prime time) is my current project.

So, I’m off and running. I’ll try to keep my rants to a minimum and I hope you find something interesting here.
